Has Cenk Uygur suddenly found God in Obama?

By: Barefoot Accountant Tuesday August 28, 2012 12:18 pm

http://my.firedoglake.com/barefootaccountant/2012/08/28/has-cenk-uygur-suddenly-found-god-in-obama/

Do you remember the days when Cenk Uygur was an aggressive progressive and would expose Obama and Congressional Democrats for what they were: corporatists wearing populists’ personas?

Well, I guess the Epic Politic’s Man, Michael Shure, has wooed and won Cenk Uygur over to his thinking that Obama is the lesser of two evils, and therefore, the Young Turks need to focus their attacks on Romney and the Republicans and spare President Obama so that he can be re-elected. I rarely hear Cenk Uygur now on The Young Turks rip into the hypocritical Obama and Democrats for their corporatism. His segments over the recent past have centered on Romney, Ryan, and the Republicans.

Hey, I am no fan of the “Three Rs”: they indeed represent a triple threat–the triple “Rs” (raid, rip off, rape)–to the middle class. But at least we know they are the Vikings who have come to pillage and plunder us and not pretending to be missionaries of democracy, like Obama and Congressional Democrats.

Last night, in case you missed it since the commercials consumed more time than it did, Cenk Uygur devoted a whole 60 seconds to the BIG story over the weekend: how Obama in an interview with the Associated Press revealed that he will give away all to Republicans by agreeing to the “Grand Deal”: cuts to social security, Medicare, Medicaid, and not do what Democrats and Progressives want — tax the rich and the corporations.

Gee, Cenk, I thought you were an “aggressive progressive”. Is this the same Cenk Uygur that attacked Obama for the last two years for being a corporatist? Did you all of a sudden find god in Obama? It sounds as if you are on a mission from god to ensure Obama’s re-election.

Don’t tell me you are falling for that nonsense about Obama being the lesser of two evils! Unlike Breyer and Ginsburg, didn’t his two Supreme Court appointees, Kagan and Sotomayor fail to speak up on the decision not to review Montana’s Citizens United case? Hasn’t Kagan been a defender of Monsanto?! Doesn’t this lead you to suspect that Obama’s Supreme Court appointees may be nothing but corporate shrills? And hasn’t Obama demonstrated to you by now he is one himself?

And if McCain were President instead of Obama, and had signed the NDAA, still had troops in the middle east, proposed Romneycare, proposed a 20% reduction in corporate taxes, agreed to the Grand Bargain to cut social programs for phoney revenue enhancements, extended the Bush tax cuts, signed an egregious estate tax reduction, secretly negotiated behind closed doors the trans-pacific trade treaty, et al, wouldn’t Democrats and Progressives have taken to the streets in protest by now?

Who is the lesser of two evils? A corporatist who can’t fool the people, or a corporatist who can fool the people by wearing a populist persona?

The more Obama cheerleading Cenk Uygur does, the quicker I turn off his program. If I wanted to watch attacks on Republicans and defenses of Democrats, I’d watch Obama’s head cheerleader and Cenk’s buddy, Al Sharpton! Now there is news, fair and balanced! He sure ain’t no propagandist like Joseph Goebbels, ma.

I knew Michael Shure was an apologist for Obama, but et tu, Cenk? I used to believe in you, Cenk. I used to respect your reporting as unbiased.

Perhaps Cenk should change his epithet from the “aggressive progressive” to the “indecisive progressive” or the “submissive progressive.”

Cenk Uygur has STOPPED calling Obama out: that is the problem. Now he is only attacking Republicans. Democrats are corporatists just like Republicans. And Obama will agree to the Grand Deal, cutting social security, Medicare, Medicaid. Cenk Uygur is no longer an aggressive progressive. He is supporting Barack Obama. And so is Jennifer Granholm, Michael Shure, Al Gore, Eliot Spitzer, and every other host on Current. They have sold out progressives.

Patrick, you are sounding like a crazy. Do you have Anonymous registered? If elected, WHO picks who he is? Is it legal? Or better, WTF are you talking about?
Patrick McGean commented 2012-09-11 18:50:16 -0600 · Flag
Jack, you are playing games when you do not succeed in getting the nod from one of the parties. In this case no difference, no choice. For those who can not support stupidity then the “fiction” of citizens being of one accord would be difficult for a politically savvy man to understand.
The write in vote, not since Washington, can be of one accord.
Rocky can you support Anonymous, spend what ever money you wish but we will elect Anonymous, the person currently known as Anonymous as President of the United States of America. Rocky? Not Mutt or Jeff, priceless.
Got sulfur? Sulfur returned can make our health issues, non issues,
consider the money not spent.

Good luck with that

Patrick, my suggestion is to quit playing games. Is this Anonymous thingy a farce, or is it a plan? Where is the web site?
Patrick McGean commented 2012-09-11 17:51:15 -0600 · Flag
The problem is that the system would tell us whom we can vote for. Two parties
with the same agenda, business as usual and getting bigger.
What these political pundits fail to realize is the write in votes are not to be trifled
With, when applicable they are counted in the precints.
Anonymous for President 2012, could be Rocky or Roseanne. Ron or Jessie even
Dr. Richard L. Stump ret. who says he is Anonymous, the point is votes not opinions.
Could it be Democrats don’t know how to write?
Mutt or Jeff? Really are you really that stupid?
This Nation is no longer for sale, nor is our labor as the corporations Mutt and Jeff want, it is all about the deal. WE are the real deal, we spend the money.
Anonymous for President 2012, Who will that be?
When citizens unit rather than being divided by the one percent, that one percent gets really nervous, often to extinction.
Anonymous is a plea to unite and take back Nation and government.

I agree with William. And while Rocky is the only person (and increasingly, Jill Stein) I would want in there, even he recognizes that the game is stacked against him. But guys like Cenk could help turn the odds, though I think they are being realistic at the moment. Pressure should be put on him and Ed Schultz and Maddox to lead instead of follow.

I think the problem is that deadlines in many states have passed without Rocky being able to get on the ballot there, to the extent that he cannot at this point get the 270 electoral votes needed to win, or even to have a significant number of votes cast for him actually be counted. So unfortunately it is no longer legally possible for Rocky to win this election, which precludes his being a serious candidate. This means that, and the campaign can correct me if I’m wrong here, but the goal now becomes education, and laying the political foundation for activities in 2016.

To that end, TYT has done a great job of being one of the VERY few progressive voices to call the Obama administration out on anything, instead of screaming for us to suck it up and accept it or else “Romney will win!”, and they have taken a massive amount of criticism from statist Democrats as a result.

Rocky, I witnessed and transcribed that great interview of you by Cenk. However, for the past couple of months they have been defending Obama, instead of crying “tyranny”, “corporatist”, “militarist”, “politician bought and paid for.”

You and other progressives deserve the full support and endorsement of progressives, especially those presenting themselves as such to us on the media. To be shunned because they fear you as a spoiler is inexcusable. I cannot recall the last time you were mentioned on their programs: and you are a serious Presidential candidate, who is more than willing to appear on their programs. What am I missing here?

This is hypocritical on their part. And I call them out on their hypocrisy and sell-out.

No offense intended to you: I think you are great American.

Love and respect,

I am very disappointed with Cenk Uygur and others on Current TV. They present themselves as progressives but are not endorsing truly progressive candidates like Rocky Anderson but corporatists like Obama.

I guess most media people have a price to sell out to corporate America, even if one is the founder of a supposed progressive program and movement.

I have been looking over your sight for a while now and haven’t found anything specific about this topic yet. Unless I just haven’t found it. I would like to know where you stand with regards to second amendment issues. How do you stand with regards to an assualt weapons ban, a magazine capacity limit, U.N. Arms trade treaty, rights to self defense, concealed carry, etc.? Ways you might help stop the propogation of violence within our society. There has been a lot of things happening in the news lately relating to this topic and I would like more details as to your position with regards to issues of this type.

I don’t know what you have in mind, Patrick, when you ask if I could support Anonymous for President. Whoever you write in on a ballot has to be qualified in advance if your vote is to count. I am qualified in several states where my name will not be on the ballot. Please vote for Rocky if you like what I stand for. Thanks!

Rocky, my father was state democratic chairman during Ike’s golf tour.
In politics winning is the whole thing, educating the masses, the unwashed peasants of County Mayo. Those peasants spoke with one accord, not one finger would be lifted to aid the Queen or Captain Boycott.
One accord. 2012 is the year, remember the 5th of November, who will we write in, only a communist pinko would write in Sponge Bob, we are talking about the truth to sustain this nation, Mutt and Jeff have already sold us out.
Anonymous for President could give us the voice of one accord.
Rocky can you support Anonymous, it could be a conflict if he is you?
Rocky Anderson commented 2012-09-07 14:39:07 -0600 · Flag
Patrick, voting for Anonymous won’t count. It will be as if you didn’t vote. (Like when I wrote in Sponge Bob for Congress the past three elections.) There is a mandatory process for qualifying as a write-in candidate. Please support me and send the message that you want an end to the corrupting influence of money in government, an end to caving in to Wall Street, and an end to wars of aggression and massive violations of civil and human rights.

Jack – We need your help. We’re not going to win this race. We know that. But we CAN WIN a lot — including getting the truth out to millions of people and launching a sustained broad-based powerful movement for change (which is the only way things are really going to get done). Please help. We’re working incredibly hard — and have been for almost a year. This effort is important. Imagine if opposition voices were nowhere to be heard during this campaign season. I’ve put everything on hold in my life and will have zero income this year. But there are campaign expenses that need to be covered. Not much, but they’re still there — and we’re almost broke. Please contribute today. Thanks – Rocky

I’m glad to see Rocky address this, though I think the scales are tipped against a third party. Even Anonymous whoever, though I’d like to know more about that as an effort. I suspect it’s sort of like a none-of-the-above write-in, and if either actually won I think a constitutional challenge would nullify it. But when push comes to shove, we — as a nation of cheapskates who refuse to send cash dollars to our corrupt politicians — will lose. I fear that until we get to an imminent rebellion we will never get their attention.

One voting system that would work is IRV, though our esteemed congress would fight it all the way. See
