How many promises can one president break? Join with others in calling for an end to the hypocritical Obama crackdown on medical marijuana.

In his typical fashion, President Obama promised when he was campaigning in 2008 that local governments should decide whetherpeople will have access to medical marijuana (now legal in 16 states and D.C.).

Here’s what he said:

“I’m not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue.”

Now, his administration is the worst ever on this issue.

Rolling Stone described the situation as follows:

[O]ver the past year, the Obama administration has quietly unleashed a multiagency crackdown on medical cannabis that goes far beyond anything undertaken by George W. Bush. The feds are busting growers who operate in full compliance with state laws, vowing to seize the property of anyone who dares to even rent to legal pot dispensaries, and threatening to imprison state employees responsible for regulating medical marijuana. With more than 100 raids on pot dispensaries during his first three years, Obama is now on pace to exceed Bush’s record for medical-marijuana busts. “There’s no question that Obama’s the worst president on medical marijuana,” says Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. “He’s gone from first to worst.”

Please add your name to the following letter, demanding of President Obama that he live up to his promise, exercise common sense, and show compassion for patients.

Dear President Obama:

Four years ago, you promised you would not use federal resources to arrest and incarcerate people for growing, selling, or using marijuana for medical purposes in states that have legalized medical marijuana.

You have blatantly broken that promise, creating tremendous confusion and unsafe burdens for medical marijuana growers, sellers, and patients. As noted in Rolling Stone (February 16, 2012), “The federal crackdown imperils the medical care of the estimated 730,000 patients nationwide – many of them seriously ill or dying – who rely on state-sanctioned marijuana recommended by their doctors.”

Don’t put patients, their doctors, state regulators, and growers in compliance with state laws at risk simply for your political purposes. Live up to your promises and end the federal crackdown on medical marijuana now.

Politics have no business in medicine. We the people should have the right to seek out any medicine that shows any proof (or no proof, our body, our right) it could bring comfort when we’re sick. Marijuana consumption has not killed anyone in over 5000 years. Is there any other product on the market that can claim the same?

This problem goes beyond medical marijuana. I urge you to stop warring on your own people. If prohibitions worked, Christianity wouldn’t be alive and well. As president, you should be doing everything in your power to end all prohibition laws—laws that make criminal adult-consensual activities. Prohibitions give leaders a rationale to war on their own citizens; they are the hallmark of heinous dictators who vigorously exercise their legal right to enforce them—as you, President Obama, have shamefully done in the U.S.. I urge you to rethink your position in this area; I urge you to be a rational and humane president, the president many of us expected you would be and have been gravely disappointed.

It’s about time to look at real studies are reporting over and over again about marihuana and stop listening to your advisors who probably receive money from drug companies and law enforcement who received much of their budget from enforcement.

The war on marijuana in general is a huge waste of government resources and tax dollars which could be used to do actual good for the American people, but raids on state-legal medical marijuana dispensaries are also an egregious to states’ constitutional rights. To put it simply, cut it out.
